The United States Census bureau is, this afternoon, Eastern Time, calculating and revealing the results of this 2020 census.

Each decade, a census will be held in the United States. The censuses will give a picture of the general population of the United States, however, a key important thing about censuses are that they will determine the allocation of House seats to each state. There are 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Census will thereby allocate the 435 seats to each state in accordance with census results.

Some states will receive more seats than others. The seats will be determined by the population of each state.

California is predicted to lose 1 House seat following the 2020 Census results. This would be a first in a very long time. Many people blame it on the fact that many (ex)Californians are moving out of California to red states, such as Texas, Arizona and Florida.

Texas is also expected to receive a few seats, together with Florida.

The allocation of House seats to each state will also determine the electoral college delegates in each presidential election. Electoral college delegates are determined via the amount of seats to the House of Representatives each state has + the Senators of each state.

The District of Columbia has 3 seats, however they have no representation in the U.S. Congress.

The results of the 2020 Census are expected to give red states more House seats.

Will this Census have an impact on the next few elections? We will see once the results are revealed.
